The Derby Hat that Keeps Growing

Keen has been going to the Derby since the ’70s — this is her 50th year — and she started wearing hats in ’82. In the past, her hats have been featured in the Kentucky Derby Museum. She liked frogs at the time and wore a little frog hat not much bigger than a ball cap. There’s a mini bottle of bourbon filled with maple syrup — or something like it. “I said (to security), ‘If you want to bend over and taste it, feel free, but I am NOT rippin’ it off my hat,’” she says. “But when you put the hat on, it’s like you’re the biggest celebrity out there. “You take your hat off and you’re a ghost,” she says. On Derby Day, she mingles in the paddock and infield, posing for photos. She outdoes herself each year, adding knickknack after knickknack.
